Angels
Two traveling angels stopped to
spend the night in the home of a wealthy family. The family was rude and
refused to let the angels stay in the mansion’s guest room. Instead the
angels were given a space the cold basement.
As they made their bed on the hard
floor, the older angel saw a hole in the wall and repaired it. When the
younger angel asked why, the older angel replied, “things aren’t always what
they seem.”
The next night the pair came to
rest at the house of a very poor, but very hospitable farmer and his wife.
After sharing what little food they had, the couple let the angels sleep in
their bed where they could have a good night’s rest. When the sun came up the
next morning, the angels found the farmer and his wife in tears. Their only
cow, whose milk had been their sole income, lay dead in the field.
The younger angel was infuriated
and asked the oldest angel, “How could you have let this happen? The first
man had everything, yet you helped him,” she accused, “The second family had
little but was willing to share everything, and you let their cow die.”
“Things aren’t always what they
seem,” the older angel replied. “When we stayed in the basement of the
mansion, I noticed there was gold stored in that hole in the wall. Since the
owner was so obsessed with greed and unwilling to share his good fortune, I
sealed the wall so he wouldn’t find it. Then, the last night as we slept in
the farmer’s bed, the angel of death came for his wife. I gave him the cow instead.
Things aren’t always what they seem.”
Sometimes this is exactly what
happens when things don’t turn out the way they should. If you have faith,
you just need to trust that every outcome is always to your advantage. You
might not know it until some time later.

In the beginning there lived one man and one woman, Toglai and Toglibon.
Their first children were a boy and a girl. When they were old enough, the boy
and the girl went far away across the waters seeking a good place to live.
Nothing more was heard of them until their children, the Spaniards and
Americans, came back. After the first boy and girl left, other children were
born to the couple; but they all remained at Cibolan on Mount Apo with their
parents, until Toglai and Toglibon died and became spirits. Soon after that
there came a great drought which lasted for three years. All the waters dries
up, so that there were no rivers, and no plant could live.
“ Surely,” said people,”Manama is punishing us, and we
must go elsewhere to find food and a place to dwell in.”
So they started out. Two went in the direction of the
sunset, carrying with them stones from Cibolan river. After a long journey they
reached a place where there were broad fields of cogon grass and an abundance
of water, there they made their home. Their children still live in that place
called Magindanau, because of the stones which the couple carried when they
left Cibolan.
Two children of Toglai and Toglibon went to the South,
seeking a home, and they carried with them women’s baskets (baraan). When they
found a good spot, they settled down. Their descendants, still dwelling there,
are called Baraan or Bilaan. Because of the women’s baskets.
So two y two the children of the first couple left the

Last
summer I followed a motorcycle race. I prepared my motorcycle. My mechanic
did it well. I was satisfied with its performance. I practiced again
and again. I couldn’t stand waiting for the championship day.
Then the
day finally came. I wore my favorite costume. I had my favorite number too,
number seventeen. What a lucky day, I thought. I saw my family: my parents and my sisters
were staring at me with a great hope. There were also my loyal friends. I
waved my hands to them. My mechanic shouted at me to give me words which
could raise my spirit. I saw other participants around me and after that of
course an umbrella girl beside me. Suddenly the flag was waved. I had a bad
start, but for my family and my friends sitting in the tribune, I would do my
best. I dropped in the seventh positions. I rushed my motorcycle and beat the
other participants one by one. Yes,
there were only two racers in front of me. But it was only two laps to go. I
left quite far with a racer number two after my front tire touched the rear
tire of a racer in front of me. I almost fell down but I could manage my
balance well. I rode in speeding and hoped my bike wouldn’t have a trouble. I
wanted to be a winner. With all of my effort I could only beat one racer in
front.
I had a
great fun at that time, fantastic! My family was standing to give me
applause. My friends yelled and hugged each other. I brought the cup and also
the money home. What a day!
